UTV Offroad Adventures: Heber, AZ to Sunrise Ski Lodge Overnight Ride

UTV Offroad Adventures delivered another unforgettable weekend, taking riders on a breathtaking journey from the tall pines of Heber, Arizona to the high-country beauty of Sunrise Ski Lodge in the White Mountains.

Friday Night Kickoff

The adventure began Friday evening at the Red Onion in Heber, where guests checked in and received their swag bags, poker master cards, raffle tickets, and event t-shirts. It was the perfect chance to catch up with old friends, meet new ones, and build excitement for the weekend ahead.

Saturday Ride: Heber to Sunrise Ski Lodge

This 125-mile one-way trek treated participants to two different routes, showing off the diverse landscapes of northern Arizona. Thanks to recent rains, many sections of the trail were completely dust-free, with only scattered puddles to keep things interesting. Riders wound their way through towering pine forests, groves of shimmering aspens, wide open meadows, and rolling hills that stretched for miles. The cool weather made riding conditions perfect.

One highlight along the way was the stop at Greens Peak, one of the highest points in the White Mountains. The overlook rewarded riders with sweeping views of the surrounding forest and valleys, making it an ideal place to stretch, take photos, and appreciate the vast beauty of Arizona’s high country. Wildlife was plentiful throughout the journey, with wild horses, turkeys, elk, deer, and free-ranging cattle adding to the adventure.

The Towns and Trails
Heber welcomed us with small-town charm. Riders fueled up for the adventure with a delicious made-to-order breakfast at The Ponderosa, complete with warm hospitality and a surprise homemade cookie to go.

Traveling through Show Low and Pinetop, we paused for a lunch break at El Charro, enjoying authentic flavors before fueling up for the next leg of the ride. We also stopped at an old rustic cabin along the trail—a reminder of Arizona’s past—making it the perfect spot for photos and a short rest. The route crossed through the Apache Indian Reservation and into the rugged beauty of the White Mountains, showcasing both cultural history and natural wonder.

The Destination: Sunrise Ski Lodge
After a full day of trail riding, we arrived at Sunrise Ski Lodge, our overnight stop nestled in the cool pines. The lodge has been newly remodeled and sits by a lake, offering a serene mountain escape. Riders checked into hotel rooms at Sunrise, enjoying the comfort of a modern mountain retreat before coming together for a group dinner.

The evening was filled with laughter and camaraderie as the Dumb Ass Award was presented, along with special recognition for the farthest traveler, who came all the way from Texas, and the oldest participant at 80 years old. A raffle and poker run winner announcement kept the fun going, with all proceeds donated back to charity—the Salvation Army Christmas Tree Angels—by participant Cathy Mack. Seeing the generosity and spirit of the group made the night even more special.

Sunday Return: Sunrise Ski Lodge to Heber

Sunday morning began with a magical start as the group woke up to elk bugling and wild horses visible on the lake, showcasing the majestic beauty of the White Mountains. After enjoying this serene moment, participants reconvened at 8 a.m. for a hearty buffet breakfast at Sunrise Ski Lodge, fueling up for the final leg of the adventure back to Heber.

The route back included scenic highlights such as Pinedale Bridge and the Deer Springs Fire Lookout, where riders paused to take in expansive views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Rain along the trail kept the ground fresh and cool, while wildlife sightings of deer and wild horses reminded us why these adventures are so unique.

The final leg included another stop in Show Low for lunch at The House Restaurant, where riders shared stories and reflected on an incredible weekend.

Community and Giving Back

With 17 cars and 30 participants—including friends from as far as Texas—this ride wasn’t just about the trails. It was about community, friendship, and giving back. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Cathy Mack for her generous donation, showing the true heart of our UTV family.

This Heber to Sunrise adventure perfectly captured what UTV Offroad Adventures is all about—making friends, making memories, and experiencing Arizona in its raw, rugged beauty.
