Camping at the city’s Riverside Municipal Campground could not have been better, What a fantastic camping experience! The campground is located within a massive municipal park on the City’s South-side offering a campground that is split into two separate sections, campsites are huge and there are hookups.
Campsites are level and gravel padded, soil is sandy so flooding during a rain event shouldn’t hamper your stay, unless it’s a heavy rain, because the Pembina River has been known to run it’s banks in the past. As with any camping trip, situational awareness with regards to the weather is vital, so as long as you know what’s going on, you can prepare and take action if necessary.
You are able to see in the following photos just how massive the campsites are in this section of the campground. I would highly recommend the campsite I stayed at, campsite #2 due to it’s size and the fact that there is not another site anywhere close to it!

First Campsites Area…
This photo shows the first camping area, as you enter the park. Remember, this campground is split into two separate areas. These sites are different than the ones further back in the park, which is where I stayed.
These sites are very close together and more aligned with modern rv parks, so if you like that sort of thing, you have the option. Again, the rear of the park is where the second campsite area is located, which is way more spacious.

As you can see in this photo, the sites offer a sturdy picnic table, fire ring and huge open site. The campground also offers full amenities such as a shower house, restrooms and more. The City of Walhalla did operate a municipal pool but this has since closed due to lack of trained lifeguards.
The sites are butted up against some massive trees which posed the only issue I could find about this campground…

With the sandy soil and the way some of these trees lean, I would be afraid these could come crashing down during a severe thunderstorm event, which are fairly common out here or during a prolonged rain event.
Fortunately, I did not experience either while staying here and had an excellent expereince while staying.

Busy place, during the weekends…
While this campground looks like it doesn’t get busy, I will tell you, it does. I was here during the week and the weekend and seems like a lot of campers from Canada. We are only a couple hours from the Winnipeg Metro area, so I can imagine this campground is popular with those folks. I can see why!
Very peaceful during the week though, even on the busy weekend, everyone was very respectful.

The Facilities…
This campground offers a modern shower house and restroom facilities in good condition for those that need it.

Pool area…
This park and campground also used to offer a municipal pool but from what I was told, They are unable to fund or get people to become lifeguards, needed to keep the facility open. It’s a shame, because it would have been a great additional service for campers.

City Of Walhalla…

The community of Walhalla is a great base camp for the Pembina Gorge State Trails, a few miles to the west of town. The community has a wonderful campground and access to the community via your ohv is permitted. While riding roads in North Dakota is not permitted at the time of this writing, You can travel roads from Walhalla to the Pembina Trails via dirt roads surrounding the community.
I took Division Street North out of Walhalla to Pembina County 106th Street, Then Took That West. Then went south on Pembina County 120th Street to enter the Pembina Gorge Trail System.
The community offer a variety of restaurants, all with great food and each with their own unique menus. Very surprising for such a small community. I was pleasantly surprised by the tasty food. I did try all the restaurants within the community while here!
The photo, for instance, is a Walleye Dinner from Water’s Family Restaurant in Downtown Walhalla. It was fantastic!

Conclusion…
In conclusion, I have to say this campground should be on your list. I can not say enough good about this campground, it is excellent for a municipal facility and for such a small community.
The fact that you can ride from the City of Walhalla, to the trail system makes this trail system an even better.
Just an all-around amazing experience, every aspect.
