This is a beautiful trail system west of the community of Walhalla in north-eastern North Dakota. You are able to ride from town (Walhalla) to the trails if you don’t want to trailer in. The road to the park is dirt, so it may be difficult with a toyhauler.
The community of Walhalla is a great base camp for the Pembina Gorge State Trails, a few miles to the west of town. The community has a wonderful municipal campground and access to the community via your ohv is permitted. While riding roads in North Dakota is not permitted at the time of this writing, You can travel roads from Walhalla to the Pembina Trails via dirt roads surrounding the community.
I took Division Street North out of Walhalla to Pembina County 106th Street, Then Took That West. Then went south on Pembina County 120th Street to enter the Pembina Gorge Trail System.
The trails in the Pembina Gorge State Park are incredible for North Dakota. Driving into the State, I noticed how flat the eastern portion of North Dakota was, just endless Farms, it seemed like.
Once you get to the Walhalla area and the Pembina River Area, it’s a very different experience! The community of Walhalla itself is very hilly and by the time you start riding the trails in the Pembina State Park you realize just how hilly this area is.
The trails are very narrow, especially considering that this system supports two-way traffic. Luckily, there wasn’t much traffic while there.
I will have more details in a separate article about the Pembine Gorge State Park.

The Trail opens up at certain points and reveals the scenic Pemiba River Valley along the trails. Most of the trails system is heavily forested and views are few and far between, but when you are able to see through the trees, the views are epic. Not what I was expecting from North Dakota! Amazing!
OHV Accessible…

The Gingras Trading Post is the second oldest building still standing in North Dakota!
Check out out blog for a separate article about this stop along the trails.

Walhalla Riverside Campground…
Beautiful campground near the heart of the community. See our separate article for a review of the campground.
